Furniture Maintenance

All Outdoor Furniture benefits from maintenance to keep it looking great for as long as possible

How often you do these tasks depends on your environment, and how worried you are about keeping it looking “brand new”.

If you clean your furniture and keep an eye on it, the simple maintenance fixes below will stop any problems getting away on you.

Coastal environments

Choose the appropriate furniture for your location. Due to the nature of the material used, steel furniture does not react well to salt air. If you are right by the coast, or the furniture is going on the edge of a pool, we recommend aluminium products. If you really want a steel piece, then you will need to do the extra maintenance and accept that the furniture will age quicker.

We have extra treatments aplied to the steel prior to powdercoating, and chair and table tops are zinc plated.

Please talk to us about it if you are unsure before deciding on a product.

Replacement feet

Are the feet still doing what they should and not worn? All Fermob's products are delivered with pads that protect the furniture feet as well as floor surfaces. These pads prevent any degradation or damage to the feet resulting from contact with the ground, which can sometimes be damp or harsh. We recommend that you replace any lost pads by ordering a new set from us.

Folding parts and under tables

This applies to steel furniture only.

Folding parts and rivets can be protected from minor corrosion and kept moving by spraying with WD-40 or CRC. This has the benefit of driving out any moisture and helps protects the steel in these exposed areas.

If the table top rolls around the wire edge (such as on Bistro or Opera+), then water can condensate under the top and sit in here. Check underneath for any early signs of minor corrosion. A spray in here also with CRC will help drive the water out. Further to this, paint touch up is the next step.

Paint touch up

The material (metal) and powdercoated surface are very resistant to knocks and bumps. If there are any scratches or chips through to bare metal then quickly touch these up. If rust begins to appear as a result of a scratch or bump, you should not sand it, but instead, repaint as quickly as possible.

Fermob have two options available, a touch up spray, and a touch up pen.

Firstly, follow the cleaning instructions to clean the surface to be painted. Wipe carefully.

Touch up spray

Wear and tear of painted items (scratches, stains, etc.) can be alleviated by applying paint spray.

Touch up pen

If the item has only had a slight knock, you could use the touch-up pen instead.

Water spots (stubborn)

If you have identified water spots while cleaning, and they have not faded and disappeared after a week or so, then they can be removed carefully with a heat gun. Fermobs guide is below:
